On Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at 11:23am, Galax Fire was dispatched to the Turman Lumber Company (152 Boyer Road) for a silo explosion. Upon arrival, firefighters found two large silos on fire. Using the Tower and ground lines, firefighters contained the fire. Turman employees assisted at the scene, by removing several tons of wood dust from the silos. Galax-Grayson EMS responded to the scene for stand-by, while the Hillsville Fire Department covered the Galax station. Fire units remained on the scene through the evening to make sure the fire was extinguished. Employees worked through the night to allow the plant to open the next morning.
