On Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, shortly after 1:00pm, several chain reaction accidents occurred due to the extreme heavy fog conditions on Fancy Gap mountain. The accidents were on the Southbound side of I77 near the 6 mile marker. Fire, Police, and EMS agencies from multiple VA and NC locations responded. The interstate traffic was shut down for multiple hours during the cleanup. The wrecks resulted in multiple injuries and a few fatalities.
