Multiple citizens were aroused by an explosion on Wednesday evening around 10:30pm on October 10, 2012. Upon receiving several 911 calls, the source of the explosion was determined to be in a silo at Turman Lumber Company. The fire department was dispatched at 10:46pm. The department requested Hillsville Fire to send a ladder truck, since Galax's ladder was out of service for repairs. After arriving on scene, members found light smoke but no fire. Officers cancelled Hillsville's ladder while en route. The department conducted an investigation and remained on scene for approximately an hour. No injuries were reported, and the plant was back to full operation within a few hours.
