At 6:19pm on Sunday, October 27th, the Galax Volunteer Fire Department was toned out for a structure fire in the fellowship hall of Midway Baptist Church in Galax. It just so happened, that the entire department was just finishing a meal at the firehouse as part of our Fall Family Picnic. Within 45 seconds, 6 trucks were loaded with 27 firefighters eager to work. Members arrived on scene within 6 minutes of the dispatch!! Chief Hankley advised of smoke showing from every eave of the 40 by 100 single story structure. Engine 2 arrived shortly after and pulled two, 150 foot preconnects, forced entry, and went to work. Knockdown was achieved quickly in zero visibility. The fire was confined to the back left corner of the structure. Content damage was minimal with no structural damage. The entire facility had heat and smoke damage. The cause appears to be from a damaged electrical outlet. Unconfirmed at this time. All units cleared in one hour.
